Tesla doesn’t manufacture tyres. Rather, they work with tyre manufacturers on tyre designs that will work with Tesla electric vehicles (EVs). Tesla-approved tyres (let’s call them Tesla tyres) must meet the efficiency, performance and safety requirements of being used with a Tesla.
How do you know when a tyre will be Tesla-compatible? Look at the tyre sidewall. Many Tesla-compatible tyres will be marked with a T0, T1 or T2 marking, however some compatible tyres won’t feature this marking.
Whilst the easy choice when replacing Tesla tyres is to buy the same tyre brand and model as was used in the vehicle when you bought it (the original equipment, or OE tyres), you don’t have to. There are a range of EV-specific tyres that may also suit your Tesla and budget. But note, they must be EV tyres, rather than standard passenger tyres, as we’ll explain next.

EVs are generally heavier than comparable petrol or diesel vehicles due to the weight of their lithium-ion battery packs. They also have a different weight distribution, (their batteries are typically positioned low across the vehicle floor rather than under a front-mounted engine). This lower centre of gravity, increased weight and instant torque delivery place additional forces through tyres when accelerating, braking and cornering. EV tyres are designed to meet these demands whilst providing adequate load capacity, grip and stability.
