Mud tyres (or mud terrain tyres) are built to handle challenging off-road conditions. They have:
4×4 mud tyres occasionally come factory fitted to SUVs, utes and 4WDs, however in most cases, they’re fitted by drivers who want improved tyre performance for driving on uneven terrain, like mud, rocky tracks, sand, and bush trails.
Mud tyres aren’t suitable for standard passenger cars, which are better matched with tyres designed for sealed-road driving. Even if you drive your passenger vehicle off road occasionally, an all-terrain tyre will be more suitable than a mud tyre, which requires more ground clearance.
You can leave them on year-round, especially if you often drive on rough terrain. However if you mainly drive on sealed roads and only occasionally off road, you might prefer to switch between highway or all-terrain tyres and mud tyres, as needed.
The tread design and reinforced construction on mud tyres can create more road noise, a firmer ride and increased rolling resistance on sealed roads. This may result in slightly higher fuel consumption compared with highway or all-terrain tyres, so consider switching between tyre types if you want to avoid these issues.
