FAQ’s

Your tyre size is always written as a sequence of numbers and letters on the tyre sidewall. In the example below, we will use a tyre size 205/55R1691V – which can split into five parts:

  • Width (205) : The width of your tyre in millimeters.
  • Profile (55) : The size between wheel rim and the top of the tyre, measured as a percentage of the tyre width – 205 mm x 55% = 113 mm (approx). This means your tyre sidewall is 113 mm high.
  • Rim size (R16) : The diameter of the rim in inches.
  • Load index (91) : The load index of the type which refers to a value in kilograms. An index value of 91 corresponds to 615 kg, which means each tyre can hold 615 kg safely.
  • Speed index (v) : The speed index of the tyre, which refers to the maximum speed the tyre can be safely driven at. A ‘V’ rated tyre is rated to a minimum speed of 240 kph.

We remove them for recycling. Most of the tyres are shredded into a range of rubber granules, which can be used in playground surfaces, floor insulation, tile adhesives, road base, and even in the manufacture of new tyres.

Your local franchisee can advise you on how many repairs can be performed for tyre of tyre If your tyre has received several punctures, it may be safer to replace it rather than keep repairing it.

A tyre puncture often results in shaky or difficult steering and bumps being felt more easily on one tyre. Once stopped, check to see if the tyre is more deflated than the others. If you do have a puncture, give Jim’s Mobile Tyres a call anytime on 13 14 56.

If the tyre is completely flat, it’s best not to drive any further and instead have it repaired/replaced. If you notice you have a slow puncture, it’s also advisable to stop as soon as possible and have the tyre repaired/replaced.

Yes, although it can be quite a difficult process as it requires having preferably a hydraulic floor jack (rather than the small jack included with your car). If you decide to rotate your own tyres, there are many online guides advising you how to do it, but if you don’t feel comfortable, feel free to call Jim’s Mobile Tyres and we’ll happily do it for you.

It’s a good idea to have your tyres rotated around every 10,000km.

Yes, although it’s advised to only rotate tyres from the same side. For example, the front driver’s-side tyre should only be rotated with the back driver’s-side tyre.

The best type of tyre rotation will depend on the type of vehicle you have. The rearward cross is mostly used for 4WDs, all-wheel drives and rear-wheel drives, with the rear tyres moved to the front (and kept on the same side), while the front tyres change sides and are moved to the back. For front-wheel drives, there are two options: X-pattern, where the front tyres change sides and are moved to the back, and likewise with the back tyres; and the forward-cross, where the front tyres are moved to the back (and kept on the same side), while the back tyres change sides and are moved to the front.

Your car’s tyre pressure should be checked every few weeks to make sure your tyres are working at their optimal pressure.

Many service stations have air pumps which will inflate your tyres at the same time as checking the tyre pressure. You can also buy portable devices which will check the pressure at any time. Always make sure to check the manufacturer’s recommendations for the correct tyre pressure.

Modern tyres include tread wear indicators, and as the tyre is used and the rubber wears out, the tyre should be replaced when the level of the tread is the same as the indicator. If you notice damage on the wall or tread of the tyre, or if the car loses grip on the road, it might be time to think about replacing the tyre(s).

Please check your vehicle’s manual or the placard on the inside of the driver’s door for all the correct information regarding tyre pressure.
